Typical costs when traveling

Flights – In May 2023, I flew round trip from Miami to Panama with American Airlines, and each ticket cost $337.63

Accommodation – I stayed at the JW Marriott Panama for 4 nights. The room had an ocean view and a king-sized bed for two. It cost a total of $919.60 with taxes. Keep in mind that there are cheaper hotel options in Panama City, and my hotel was not an all-inclusive.

Excursions – I booked all three of my excursions through viator.com.

  1. All-Inclusive Full-Day Taboga Island Catamaran Tour from Panamá City: Priced at $99 per person.
  2. Day Tour in San Blas Islands – All Included, Visiting 4 Islands: This adventure cost $159 per person.
  3. Ocean to Ocean Panama Canal and Jungle Tour: I joined this tour for $114.75 per person.

Total Cost – Our total cost for both of us was $2,340.40, covering flights, hotel, and excursions, but not food and transportation.

  • Luxury Travelers: If you’re looking to stay in luxury hotels, dine at upscale restaurants, and enjoy various high-end activities, plan for a daily budget of $200 or more.

FAQ about Panama

  1. Can U.S. citizens enter Panama without a visa? - No visa is required for this destination for a stay of up to 180 days. Please keep in mind that while a visa is not required, you must: Hold a passport valid at least six months on entry with one blank visa page. Hold proof of onward/return flights.
  2. What is the best currency to use in Panama? - Panama’s official currency is the balboa. The rate of exchange for the balboa has always been tied to the US dollar—one dollar equals one balboa. Panama does not, however, print its own paper currency and instead uses the US dollar as legal tender.
  3. Should I get a taxi or Uber? - Both options are generally safe, and I personally used both during my stay. However, I did notice that taxis occasionally add extra charges, but they can be more convenient depending on your location.
  4. What is the weather like in Panama normally? - Panama has a hot and humid, tropical climate, with a long rainy season from May to January and a short dry season from January to May.
  5. Is it legal to gamble in Panama? - Yes, it is. During my stay at the JW Marriott Panama, they had a casino next door. Usually, bets ranged from $5 to $10, depending on the day.

Safety Tips

I felt safe traveling in Panama by being cautious. I exercised caution by avoiding nighttime strolls and steering clear of potentially risky neighborhoods. Additionally, I made a conscious choice not to flaunt any expensive jewelry or high-end clothing brands. It’s a valuable travel tip to blend in seamlessly with the local culture and surroundings when exploring a foreign destination, ensuring a more secure and enjoyable experience. I always make sure to review the Panama Travel Advisories.
